Amazon lithium battery policy update: Account Health checks for sellers

A lithium battery notice is not only a hazmat shipping problem. Match the ASIN, battery attributes, and test documents before a compliance request becomes a listing block.

On May 7, 2026, Amazon posted a Seller Forums update saying it had updated the compliance policy for lithium batteries. Amazon said affected ASINs would receive notice through the Account Health Dashboard within the next week and that the update includes required listing attributes plus third-party testing, inspection, and certification requirements.

For US sellers, and for UK sellers managing Amazon.com or cross-border battery products, the practical issue is evidence fit. A lithium battery request can start as a product-compliance task, but it can become a restricted-products case, an inactive ASIN, stranded FBA inventory, or a weak appeal if the seller cannot connect the exact battery, product page, and test record.

Do not answer with a generic hazmat appeal

A lithium battery notice needs product-specific attributes and matching compliance records. A broad statement that the item is safe, common, or already sold by other sellers usually misses the review point.

Short answer: match the ASIN to the battery record

Start by identifying what Amazon is actually reviewing. The May update covers lithium batteries, replacement batteries matching the original battery in a device, single-cell and multi-cell battery packs, rechargeable secondary lithium batteries, Li-ion, LiPo, LiFePO4, rechargeable lithium-ion coin or button cells, and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for designated devices. Amazon separately points sellers to e-mobility accessory requirements when that is the product type.

  • Save the Account Health entry, Performance Notification, case ID, marketplace, ASIN, SKU, and response deadline before editing the listing.
  • Identify whether the product is a standalone battery, a replacement battery, a battery packed with equipment, or a device containing a battery.
  • Record the battery chemistry, model, cell count, watt-hour rating, voltage, capacity, manufacturer, and product model where those details are available.
  • Keep Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, FBA, and seller-fulfilled records separate because the same physical product can trigger different workflow questions.
  • Check whether the product may belong under an e-mobility device accessory rule rather than the general lithium battery path.

Build the document packet before uploading

Amazon's update points sellers toward third-party testing, inspection, and certification requirements. That means the useful packet is not a random supplier PDF bundle. It should prove that the document belongs to the exact battery, product, ASIN, and marketplace under review.

  • Collect the current test report, certificate, inspection record, safety data sheet, exemption sheet, UN 38.3 test summary, or other battery document Amazon requested.
  • Compare model numbers, battery chemistry, rated capacity, manufacturer name, product photos, labels, and packaging details across every document.
  • Keep invoices and supplier or manufacturer correspondence nearby, but do not use an invoice as a substitute for a required safety or test record.
  • Do not upload altered certificates, generic templates, documents for a different battery model, or files that do not name the tested product clearly.
  • If Amazon rejects a document, isolate the exact mismatch before sending a second version.

Separate listing attributes from FBA transport rules

Lithium battery compliance can sit in several Seller Central areas at once. The ASIN may need listing attributes, dangerous-goods classification, product-compliance documents, FBA transport answers, or shipment workflow corrections. Amazon's earlier 2026 lithium-ion air-transport guidance also told sellers to provide requested battery compliance information for products packaged with lithium-ion batteries and said products with lithium-ion batteries above 2.7 Wh packed with products must meet a 30 percent or less state-of-charge requirement for air fulfillment.

  • Check Manage All Inventory, Product Policy Compliance, Account Health, Manage Dangerous Goods Classification, and Send to Amazon before assuming the blocker is only one case.
  • Confirm whether the ASIN is inactive, under dangerous-goods review, limited to ground fulfillment, stranded, blocked for missing attributes, or blocked for missing documents.
  • Preserve screenshots of the battery questions and any Seller Central fields that show the submitted chemistry, capacity, and packaging answers.
  • If FBA transport is limited but the listing is still active, do not write the case as a full listing deactivation.
  • If the ASIN is blocked or compliance documents are rejected, move out of shipping workflow language and answer the restricted-products record directly.

When this becomes a restricted-products recovery issue

Most lithium battery requests should be solved by accurate product data and matching documents. Northline-style recovery work becomes more relevant when the ASIN is blocked, repeated submissions are rejected, inventory is stranded, or the seller cannot tell whether Amazon is treating the product as conditionally allowed, misclassified, unsupported, or prohibited.

  • Use Restricted Products when Amazon is questioning whether the battery product is allowed, conditionally allowed, correctly documented, or prohibited.
  • Use ASIN Listing Deactivation when the main problem is inactive inventory, suppressed offers, or a blocked product detail page after the compliance review.
  • Use Inauthentic Products only if Amazon shifts from battery compliance into supplier, invoice, or product-authenticity doubts.
  • Use Improper FBA Reimbursement Claims only if the issue later becomes missing inventory, shipment evidence, or reimbursement claim integrity.
  • Avoid arguments based on other sellers, old approvals, or supplier assurances unless the documents themselves match Amazon's current request.

The practical closing test is whether a reviewer can follow one clean line: this ASIN contains this battery, these attributes match the product page, these documents match the battery, and this workflow explains the current FBA or Account Health status. If that line is still broken, return to the restricted-products owner context before another upload or appeal makes the record harder to fix.
